Why Do We Give?
Consider Paul’s words for the Corinthian church:
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-9
God has gifted each of us with talents and abilities. We use those gifts in various capacities to earn incomes to pay our mortgages, feed and clothe our kids, keep the lights on, etc. Giving part of that income back to a local church acknowledges our ultimate dependence on God for providing those resources. Giving demonstrates to God, others, and ourselves that we’re stewards of His resources. As we follow this giving pattern, God’s work through the local church ministry is enabled and expanded.
